MARGIELA AT BUKOWSKIS

Blog

One designer that inspire me enormous is Margiela. I have seen exhibitions with Margiela in other countries during the years, but this time is the first in Sweden.

Along with Ann Demeulemester and Dries van Noten, the Belgian Martin Margiela is often described as a deconstructivist. Stepping away from the uniform-like concept of ‘dressed for success’ he embraces fabrics that are turned inside out, seams that are revealed and, above all, no visible logos.
Martin Margiela graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in 1979, and a few years later began working for Jean Paul Gaultier. He made his debut in 1989 with a tacit, but very clear message: old is new, low is high (holding fashion shows in a Salvation Army depot and a metro station), reusing clothes from earlier seasons. Another notorious act is his refusal to sign his creations. The white (empty) label of the fashion house is a legendary statement which shifts the focus from the lonely creator-genius to fashion as a collective process.

Bukowskis is now presenting an exhibition that showcases a unique collection of pieces by Maison Margiela – some thirty originals from the most revolutionary collections of the 1990s. Works of great collecting value and are coveted by private collectors as well as museums throughout the world.

A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk

Blog

On the 13th of september the exhibition A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk opens at FIT Museum in New York. From Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior to Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, many of the greatest fashion designers of the past century have been gay. Indeed, it is widely believed that most male fashion designers are gay. Is this just a stereotype? Or do gay men really have a special relationship with fashion?

The exhibition features approximately 100 ensembles spanning more than a century of fashion. Organized in roughly chronological order, the exhibition explores the history of modern fashion through the lens of gay and lesbian life and culture, addressing subjects including androgyny, dandyism, idealizing and transgressive aesthetic styles, and the influence of subcultural and street styles, including drag, leather and uniforms.
This will be one of my highlights when I go to New York this year! The exhibition ends at the 4th of january 2014.

Inspiring Ibiza

Blog

This summer has been really good so far. With two relaxing weeks in Italy in july and now I recently arrived from Ibiza. Not as relaxing as Italy, but so much impressions and inspiration. I love music and one of my best moments from this trip is when one of my favourite Dj, Armand Van Helden, plays “You don’t know me” at a crowded Pacha.

I have meet so many nice people and I have have seen so many new beautiful places in this island. Here are some pictures, the first ones are from my favorite hotel Destino. Such a peaceful place to have a nice meal and just relax in there tasteful interior. In the afternoon the music starts to play louder and dancers come out by the pool and dance.

The last night in Ibiza I spent in Lio, which is a restaurant, cabaret and nightclub. One of the most original and glamorous dining experiences I ever had. Lio enjoys a stunning location, with the multi-million euro yachts of the marina at the front door and the open back looking across to Ibiza Town. The food is delicious and the show is spectacular.

But the thing that inspires me most is all the people. I can sit and stare for hours. All the good looking gay guys, the dancers, women’s that made about 5 to many plastic surgery, the hippies… but the one that is still on my mind is the 65 year old gentleman at Pacha, who was wearing different sunglasses and turbans each night. So cool.
